Monnie Reed Hughes, 100, died Sunday, August 26, 2012, in the Golden Living Center at Clifton Forge, Virginia.

Mrs. Hughes was born July 9, 1912, in Alleghany County, a daughter of the late Ernest Lee and Bessie Hoke Reed.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her Husband, Bryan H. Hughes; two sisters, Cleo Reed and Knowles Elaine Thorburn, and two brothers, Henry Lewis Reed and Ernest Reed, Jr.

She was employed for many years as a secretary with the Department of Defense in Washington, DC.

Surviving are two sisters, Sadie Smathers, of Salem, and Erma Patterson of Clifton Forge; one brother, Calvin Reed, of Covington, and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive their friends from 12:30 p.m. until service time at Arritt Funeral Home, Covington, Virginia.

The funeral service will be held Tuesday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. at the graveside in Persinger Memorial Cemetery with the Rev. Bill Gilliland officiating.
