Retired Millwright Was Well-Known Local Farmer

Haden Thurston (Dick) Dudley Jr., 92, of 20363 Botetourt Road, Eagle Rock, Virginia, died on Tuesday, August 28, 2012, at Richfield Recover and Care Center in Salem, Va.

He was born on January 27, 1920, in Botetourt County, Va., to the late Haden T. Dudley Sr. and Mary Byer Dudley.

During World War II, he served in the United States Navy as Seaman First Class aboard the Navy destroyer, U.S.S. Daniel.

He was a retired millwright and mechanic supervisor for Westvaco of Covington and a self-employed farmer.

He attended the Church of Christ in Covington.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Anna K. Dudley; and five brothers, Jim Dudley, Warren Dudley, Hunter Dudley, Ike Dudley, and Pete Dudley.

He is survived by a daughter, Carlos Ann Spellman and husband, Ron Spellman, of Blue Ridge; a son, Haden T. "Kelley" Dudley III and wife, Julie Campbell Dudley, of Troutville; a sister, Mary Dudley Myers, of Fincastle; three grandchildren, Ivo Campbell Dudley, Jonathan Trevor Spellman, and Meghan Ashley Spellman; a number of nieces and nephews; and special friend, Francis Persinger and her family of Iron Gate.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, August 31, 2012, in the chapel of Nicely Funeral Home, Clifton Forge, with the Reverend Ken Goodmiller officiating. Interment will follow in Bethel U.M.C. Cemetery in Botetourt County. The family will receive friends on Thursday evening, August 30, 2012, from 6 until 8 p.m. at the home of Mary D. Myers, 120 Santillane Farm Road, Fincastle, Va., and on Friday afternoon at Nicely Funeral Home, one hour prior to the service.
