Former Iron Gate Post Clerk Dies At Age 90

Lillian Virginia Balser Conner, age 90, of 209 Fork Farm Road, Iron Gate, Virginia, went to be with the Lord Monday, September 3, 2012.

She was at home, surrounded by her family.

She was born October 26, 1921 in Alleghany County, Virginia to the late John F. Balser, Sr. and Lottie Vest Balser.

She was a homemaker throughout her life and worked as a postal clerk for the Post Office in Iron Gate.

Known as "Granny", she loved her flower garden, and watching the squirrels, wild birds, and hummingbirds, and enjoyed cooking for the family she dearly loved.

In years past, she was a long time member of Iron Gate Baptist Church, where she taught the Ladies Sunday School Class.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 68 years, Garland Roscoe Conner in July of 2010; a sister, Margaret Balser Bryant; and two brothers, John F. Balser, Jr. and Calvin "Dennie" Balser.

She is survived by a daughter, Kathryn Conner Thompson and husband Raymond "Doc" Thompson, Jr. of Eagle Rock; a brother, Robert "Bob" Balser and wife, Phyllis of Iron Gate; two sisters-in-law, Violet Balser and Nancy Balser, both of Covington; a grandson, Michael Patrick Thompson and wife, Jeannie Vance Thompson of Eagle Rock, and a granddaughter, Stacy Annette Thompson Freeman and husband, James Eric Freeman of Troutville; and three great grandchildren, Karleigh Paige Thompson, Maggie Rae Thompson, and Conner Joseph Freeman.

A funeral service will be conducted on Thursday at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel of Nicely Funeral Home, Clifton Forge with Pastor John Godfrey, Jr. and Reverend Edith Snedegar officiating. Interment will follow in Locust Bottom Cemetery, Botetourt County. Pallbearers will be Gary Nicely, Donald Conner, Kirk Alderman, Barry Balser, Rober Balser, Barry Daniel, and Wayne Evans. The family will receive friends on Wednesday evening from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. at Nicely Funeral Home and other times at the residence of Raymond and Kathy Thompson, 376 Fork View Road , Eagle Rock, VA. The family suggests memorial tributes take the form of contributions to Mountain Regional Hospice Volunteers, P. O. Box 637, Clifton Forge, VA 24422.
