Clifton Forge Native Was Lifelong Presbyterian Church Member

Mary Wilson Lawrence Sherman, age 89, of The Woodlands Nursing Home, Clifton Forge, Virginia, died Tuesday, September 4, 2012 at The Woodlands.

She was born May 15, 1923 in Clifton Forge to the late Mitchell Payne and Lyda Elizabeth Burks Lawrence.

She was a homemaker and a lifelong member of Clifton Forge Presbyterian Church, where she taught Sunday school, was active in the Women of the Church Organization and various circles, and sang in the choir.

She was a former member of the Julia Jackson Chapter of U.D.C. , the Clifton Forge Elks Ladies Auxiliary, the Clifton Forge Alumni Association, the Junior and Senior Womens Club, and the Twilight Garden Club.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Fred M. "Shorty" Sherman in August of 1989; a son, George Mitchell Sherman; and a sister, Elizabeth Lawrence Owens. She is survived by her daughter, Kathryn Sherman Craft of Midlothian; a brother, Mitchell Payne Lawrence and wife, Edith Fout Lawrence of Waynesboro; three grandchildren, Melissa Craft Bekken of Severn, MD, Elizabeth Craft Flattum of Mosely, and Kathryn Craft Collier of Glen Bernie, MD; seven great grandchildren, Quintin T. Bekken, Carson T. Bekken, John Gage Collier, Cody B. Collier, Mitchell E. Flattum, Meredith E. Flattum, and Morgan E. Flattum; and five nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. in the chapel of Nicely Funeral Home, Clifton Forge with Reverend Virgil Woodie officiating. Interment will follow in Mountain View Cemetery, Clifton Forge. Pallbearers will be Pete Bekken, Scott Collier, Quintin Bekken, Carson Bekken, Mitchell P. Lawrence III, and Terry Loving. The family will receive friends on Friday evening from 7:00 - 8:30 p.m. at Nicely Funeral Home. The family suggests memorial tributes take the form of contributions to The Woodlands Residence Activity Fund, C/O The Woodlands Nursing Home, 1000 Fairview Ave, Clifton Forge, VA.
