Obituary for Connie Morgan Connie Morgan
Longtime Covington Resident Dies At Age 61

Once diagnosed with ovarian and primary peritoneal cancer four years ago, Connie never gave up. She never complained, maintaining a brave and cheerful outlook of an optimistic future - even through countless chemotherapy treatments, x-rays, hospitalizations and pain. She continued to be at the center of her family and friendsŐ daily lives.

Connie died at home in Covington, VA, on September 28, 2012.

Connie Morgan was born June 6, 1951, and grew up in Norfolk, VA. Connie continued her early years in the Tidewater area. In June, 1984, she married Jerry Morgan, and they moved to Covington, VA, shortly thereafter. Connie's business and organizational intellect allowed her to work as a business manager for almost 20 years.

Filled with compassion and interest in gardening and wanting to serve others, she purchased and became the proprietor of the Jackson River Garden Center in 2002. Due to the intense labor required to maintain the business and her waning health, the business was sold in 2010.

Connie was an active member of Granbery Memorial United Methodist Church, singing with the Praise Team, leading the Senior High Sunday School Class, teaching hymns in sign language to the church youth, and helping with Sunday School Superintendent duties. Connie loved being outdoors, working in the yard, most notably riding her John Deere with the bicycle basket that held her Miller High Life, spraying the walks with the hose to cool off, and finishing the day sitting down on the Jackson River behind her house.

Connie was an avid lover of lighthouses and the National Parks. She traveled with family and friends visiting parks as far as Death Valley, California. Other National Parks she visited include Yellowstone, Grand Teton, Everglades, Grand Canyon, Badlands, Shenandoah, Gettysburg, Pictured Rocks, Sleeping Bear Dunes, and Cape Lookout National Seashore where she climbed the 207-step lighthouse in July, 2012. She traveled, even after her diagnosis, through August, 2012, when she visited the state of Michigan and saw 34 lighthouses.

Connie is survived by her husband, Jerry Morgan, her daughter, JJ (Ficarra) Campbell, her mother, Margaret Pittman, and her sister, Peggy Ware-Harper. Her father, John Ware, of Chesapeake, VA, also survives her.

Connie's life will be celebrated in a Memorial Service on Saturday, October 6, at 1:00 p.m. at Granbery Memorial United Methodist Church, 425 W Main St, Covington, VA. Family and out-of-town guests are welcome to gather in the Fellowship Hall directly following the service. A tax deductible donation, in lieu of flowers, made to UNC Cancer Center-GYN Oncology, CB# 7295, UNC @ Chapel Hill, Chapel Hill, NC, 27599, or on-line at https://medicalfoundationofnc.org/unclineberger/makeagiftwill be greatly appreciated by the family and those still fighting gynecologic cancer.
