Former C&O Nurse's Aide Was Christ United Methodist Church Member

Madeline Minnie Lewis Burks, 99, of Covington, Virginia, died Monday, November 5, 2012 at The Woodlands Nursing Center in Clifton Forge.

She was born December 17, 1912 in Covington, a daughter of the late William S. and Betty Foster Lewis.

For a number of years Mrs. Burks was employed at the former C & O Hospital in Clifton Forge as a nurse's aide.

She was a Lifetime member of the Christ United Methodist Church, where she served as President of the United Methodist Women for a number of years. She was a longtime Sunday School teacher and member of the Ladies Circle and Ladies Bible Class.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Burks was preceded in death by her husband, Melvin R. Burks, Sr. in 1974 and also by three brothers and three sisters.

Surviving are two sons and daughters in law, Gerald "Jerry" and Dot Burks and Melvin "Buddy" and Pam Burks, all of Covington; four granddaughters, Michelle and Jimmy Cash and Lisa and Dennis Trainer, all of Covington; Kim and Chris Harris of Yorktown and Jessica and Jay Knighton of Covington; one grandson, Micah and Kimberly Burks of Selma; six great granddaughters, Renee Cash of Charleston, SC, Sierra Knighton, of Covington, Sabrina Burks of Selma; Kayla Smith and Brianna Smith both of Bedford; Brittany Harris of Lynchburg; eight great grandsons, Brandon Trainer of Roanoke; Dustin Trainer of Christiansburg; Jeremy Cash, Micah A. Burks, Blake Knighton and Tyler Kinghton, all of Covington; Bradley Butler of Selma and Brandon Harris of Lynchburg; one great great grandson, Aaden Cash of Covington; two great great granddaughters, Madolyn Burks and Spencer Burks; a special friend, Katie Armstrong of Covington and several nieces and nephews.

The interment will be made in Alleghany Memorial Park.

Active pallbearers will be Johnny Brown, Jimmy Cash, Chris Harris, Larry Peters, Dennis Trainer, Micah Burks. and Tyler Knighton. Alternates will be Buddy Barnett and Fred Smith.

Memorials: In keeping with Mrs. Burks' wishes, memorial donations may be made to Christ United Methodist Church, 200 E. Fudge Street, Covington, VA 24426 or to a charity of your choice.

Arritt Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements
