Obituary for Charles Francis Hileman Charles Francis Hileman
Veteran, Longtime Educator, Worked In Bath County Schools, DSLCC

Charles Francis Hileman, age 85, of 6914 Pimlico Drive, Mechanicsville, Virginia, and formerly from Millboro, Virginia, died Saturday, November 10, 2012 at Hanover Health and Rehabilitation Center in Mechanicsville.

He was born September 27, 1927 in Clifton Forge, Virginia, to the late Dr. Samuel Palmer Hileman, Sr. and Ruth Yerby Hileman.

He served his country in the United States Navy during World War II from 1945 - 1947, and also the United States Army in the Transportation Corps as 1st Lt. during the Korean War from 1951 - 1953.

He was a graduate of Virginia Episcopal School (VES) in Lynchburg, and received his Bachelors, Masters, and Degree of Advanced Studies from the University of Virginia.

As an educator, he taught at Millboro High School, was a guidance counselor for Bath County High School, and was Counselor and Director of Financial Aid at Dabney S. Lancaster Community College, retiring in 1991.

He was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, where he served on the Parish Board, was a religious education teacher, and a Eucharistic minister, and was a member of the Knights of Columbus.

He loved UVA sports, art, and spending time with his grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Samuel Palmer Hileman, Jr.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Ilena Cruise Hileman of Mechanicsville; son, Mark Palmer Hileman and wife, Patrice, and their children, Melinda Hileman, Mara Hileman, and Jonathan Hileman, all of Sudbury, Massachusetts; daughter, Teresa Hileman Shepard of Selma, and her children, Katie Shepard of Selma, Christopher Shepard of the University of Arizona in Tucson, AZ, and Specialist Samuel "Andy" Shepard, USA, Fort Drum, NY; daughter, Anne Hileman Guthrie and her husband, Joseph, and their daughter, Hannah Guthrie of Salem; and son, C. Matthew Hileman and wife, Karen of Mechanicsville, and their children, Austin Hileman of Mechanicsville, and Jacob Hileman of Glenville State College, WV; and a number of nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted on Thursday at 2:00 p.m. in St Joseph's Catholic Church, Clifton Forge, with Father Tom Collins and Reverend Rob Sherrard officiating. Interment will follow in Mount Carmel Cemetery, Low Moor.

Military honors will be presented at the graveside by members of the Burnside-Carpenter VFW Post # 4299.

Pallbearers will be Austin Hileman, Jacob Hileman, Jonathan Hileman, Andy Shepard, Christopher Shepard, Joe Guthrie, and Charles Hileman.

The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 6:00 - 7:30 p.m. at Nicely Funeral Home, Clifton Forge, and a rosary will be recited at 7:00 p.m. Friends may visit at other times at the family home on Hileman Lane in Millboro.

The family suggests memorial tributes take the form of contributions to the Dabney S. Lancaster Education Foundation, C/O the C. F. Hileman Scholarship Fund, P. O. Box 1000, Clifton Forge, VA 24422.
