Obituary for Susanne Smith Lipscomb Susanne Smith Lipscomb
Lexington Resident Was Smith College Graduate, Active In Lexington Community

Susanne Smith Lipscomb, 91, died December 15, 2012, at her longtime home in Lexington, Virginia.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 60 years, Col. Arthur M. Lipscomb Jr.

She would have celebrated her 92nd birthday New Year's Eve.

Surviving are her daughter, Anne Lipscomb Burger, of Cornelius, N.C.; and son and daughter-in-law, Arthur M. Lipscomb III and Anne Drake McClung, of Lexington.

Left with happy memories of the "Gangy" are four grandchildren, Elizabeth B. Baule and husband, John, of Oakton, Va., Emily B. Reeder and husband, Brent, of Greenville, S.C., Daniel W. Burger III and fiance, Karen Redinger, of Atlanta and Andrew S. Burger and wife, Vicky, of Charlotte, N.C. Also remembering their loving great-grandmother are Jack, Kate and Margaret Baule, Ben and Caroline Reeder, and Anne Stuart and Elise Burger.

She was so proud of her grandchildren and delighted with her great-grandchildren.

After growing up in Madison, N. J. and attending Smith College, then working on Wall Street during World War II, she moved to Lexington as a newlywed in 1945, when her husband returned as professor of English at VMI.

She leaves lasting legacy to the community she loved, loyal member and Elder of Lexington Presbyterian Church, member and past president of the Women of the Church, member of Blue Ridge Garden Club and it Roots and Shoots program at Waddell School, Historic Lexington Foundation and many other civic groups.

Her wonderful CNA and caregiver, Margaret "Candy" Moore, made the last five years of her life as full as possible and enabled her to remain in her home as she wished. The family is grateful to her and to the caring nurses of Lexington Hospice, who assisted the family the last month.

A memorial service celebrating her life will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, December 19, 2012, at Lexington Presbyterian Church. The family will receive friends afterwards. Memorial gifts may be sent to Roots and Shoots School Program, C/O Molly Brown, 306 Overhill Dr., Lexington, VA 24450.
