Obituary for Michael Andrew Groot Michael Andrew Groot
Buena Vista Attorney Was William & Mary, W&L Graduate

Michael Andrew Groot, 46, of Buena Vista, Virginia, died peacefully on December 19, 2012.

During his illness he was surrounded by family and enjoyed visits from good friends from different periods of his life.

Michael attended Parry McCluer High School, Buena Vista, and the College of William and Mary.

He received his J.D. from Washington & Lee University School of Law, after which he practiced law briefly in Glen Burnie, Md., and then in Buena Vista.

Having played college football, Michael was an avid fan of the Dallas Cowboys, Baltimore Ravens, Texas Longhorns, UNC Tarheels and William & Mary Tribe. He enjoyed watching ACC basketball, especially to cheer on the Tarheels.

Michael enjoyed political discussions, cooking, listening to music (especially good country music), hunting, talking with friends and family and spending time with his sweet black lab, Bud. He could spend hours talking with his mother, Ellen about all things. He was a playful soul who got great delight in following the activities, antics and achievements of his nieces and nephew.

Michael is survived by his mother Ellen Groot of Gastonia, N.C.; sister, Stefanie Groot and her husband, Eric Cottrell and their daughters Anna, Miranda and Fiona Cottrell of Charlotte, N.C.; and sister, Donna Taylor and her husband, Mark Taylor and their children, Emma Grey and Andrew James Taylor, of Gastonia.

His death came much too soon, but we entrust Michael's soul to God and know that he is in Heaven having a long-awaited chat with his father and best friend, Roger.

In lieu of flowers, friends and family are asked to make a donation to their local hospice organization. According to Michael's wishes, no memorial service will be held; however, a gathering will be announced in the future and people are encouraged to post reflections and messages on McLean Funeral Home's website, www.mcleanfuneral.com. McLean Funeral Directors of Gastonia is serving the family of Mr. Groot.
