Obituary for Evelyn Mills Evelyn Mills
Covington Native Worked With Allstate Insurance Company

Evelyn Mills (known to many as "Agie"), born in Covington, Virginia, on November 10, 1923, passed away in her sleep the morning of January 16, 2013, after a long illness.

In her final days, ever the lover of good company, Evelyn was able to visit with numerous family and friends, for which her children are profoundly grateful.

The family would also like to thank the staff of Salem Health and Rehabilitation for their excellent care and loving support during this time.

Evelyn graduated from Covington Business School and attended National Business College. She was employed in the accounting department of Allstate Insurance Company for a number of years and retired from Samuel Spigel, where she served as bookkeeper for 22 years.

Evelyn was a member of Rosalind Hills Baptist Church before joining Garden City Baptist Church over 20 years ago.

Evelyn's passion for genealogy led her to a number of historical societies. She was a member of Order of the Eastern Star, Hillcrest #159, and United Daughters of the Confederacy (UDC), Southern Cross Chapter # 746. She also belonged to the Great Grandfathers Club of the UDC, in memory of her great-grandfather, George Hayes.

Evelyn was predeceased by her parents, Thomas and Loretta Dame; husbands, Robert Agner and Harry Mills Jr.; and son, Ronald Agner.

Surviving family include Larry Agner, son; Harrilyn Mills, daughter, and her husband John Gibbons; and daughter-in-law, Bonnie Agner, all of Roanoke.

Surviving grandchildren are Julie Agner and her husband, Donald Rovira of Picayune, Mississippi; Penny Robbins and her husband, Doug of Vinton, Virginia; Sarah Brewer of Gulfport, Mississippi; Robert Agner of Roanoke; Alice Agner of Jackson, Mississippi; and Ginny Gibbons of Roanoke.

Also surviving are her sister, Pauline Carter, and brother, Don Dame, and his wife Mary, and sister-in-law, Kathryn Buchanan, all of Roanoke.

Very special nieces include Vanetta Stockton of Roanoke; Karen Dame and her husband, DeForest Mellon of Charlottesville, Virginia; Cynthia Reed of Christiansburg, Virginia; and very special nephews, Gary Carter and his wife, Becky of Charlotte, North Carolina, and George Remaine and his wife, Harriet of Roanoke.

Great grandchildren include Alana and Justin Robbins of Vinton; Michael Freed of New Orleans, Louisiana; Joseph Cospelich of Saucier, Mississippi; Anna and Matthew Swank of Gulfport; Alex and Brent Brewer of Gulfport; Gabrielle Boudreaux of Metairie, Louisiana; and Lila Agner of Oxford, Mississippi. Great great grandchildren include Shelby, Leighanne, and Aiden Swank of Gulfport.

Services will be held at Oakey's Downtown, 318 Church Avenue, noon Saturday, January 19, with visitation beginning at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, please consider a special contribution to the charity of your choice in honor of Evelyn's loving ways, generosity, and concern for others.
