Obituary for Joseph E. Smith Joseph E. Smith
World War II Veteran Was South Carolina Native

Joseph E. Smith, 90, of 1018 Cliftwood Circle, Clifton Forge, Virginia, departed this life on February 6, 2013 at home surrounded by family.

Joseph was born in Lynchburg, South Carolina, on October 28, 1922 to the late Joseph Smith and Leona McFadden Smith.

He was a member of the United States Army during World War II and served honorably.

After retiring and moving to Clifton Forge, he became a member of Main Street Baptist Church.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Jerry R. Smith in 2008, two brothers and five sisters.

Joseph leaves to mourn his absence his wife, Julia Gamble Smith, who has been his supporter for 66 years.

Joseph has one surviving sister Barbara Hill (Charlie), two surviving brothers, William Smith (Emma), and Charles Smith (Frances). Also left to mourn him is his only granddaughter, Andrea Smith; four great grand children, and three great - great grandchildren. He also leaves a sister-in-law, Mary Bradley, and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.

A funeral service will be conducted 1 p.m. Saturday at Nicely Funeral Home Chapel in Clifton Forge with Reverend Preston Tyler officiating.

Interment will follow in Mountain View Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Nicely Funeral Home from 12 noon Saturday until the time of the service. Friends may also call any time at Nicely Funeral Home, Clifton Forge.

Visitation at other times will be at the residence at 1018 Cliftwood Circle, Clifton Forge.

The family suggests memorial tributes take the form of contributions to Mountain Regional Hospice Volunteers, P. O. Box 637, Clifton Forge, VA 24422.
