World War II Veteran, Businessman Was Active In The Rockbridge-Lexington Community

Charles Edward (Halfie) Swink, 91, of Lexington, Virginia, died on Monday, February 18, 2013, at Stonewall Jackson Hospital.

Born July 31, 1921, in Lexington, a son of the late John Brooke Swink and Lula Hogue Swink.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Turner "Guinny" Swink; one son, A. Dennis Swink II, who is survived by his former wife, Gail; three sisters, Margaret Swink, Dora Rogers, Helen Swink; three brothers, Alton Swink, Hogue Swink, and Frank Swink.

Surviving are one son, Charles E. "Eddie" Swink Jr. and his fiance, Courtney Kendrick, of Richmond; one daughter, Susan Swink Linkous and her husband, Bill, of Lexington; one brother, John B. Swink Jr.; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren.

Mr. Swink was a member of the Lexington Presbyterian Church.

He was a veteran of World War II in the 13th Armored Division, serving in Europe in General Patton's 3rd Army.

He was past president of the United Way, past president of the Lexington Golf Club, past member of the Lexington City Council, past Chairman, Small Business Stonewall Jackson Hospital Campaign.

Prior to retiring, he spent 43 years in the retail business with his brother-in-law Charles "Red" Turner. Together they owned Turner's Store and The Campus Corner.

He was President and Manager of Wynmar, Inc., Concessionary of the V.M.I. Post Exchange.

Mr. Swink was awarded 11 of a possible 12 athletic letters at Lexington High School, was captain of the first undefeated football team in 1938 and was inducted into the Hall of Fame. He was also awarded the prestigious Blair Nicely Award in 2009.

A funeral service will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday, February 22, 2013, at Lexington Presbyterian Church with the Dr. William Klein officiating. Committal will be before the service at 1:30 p.m. at Stonewall Jackson Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Lexington Fire Department, 708 S. Main Street, Lexington, VA 24450 or to Virginia State Golf Association Foundation, 600 Founders Bridge Boulevard, Midlothian, VA 23113.
