Longtime Educator Was Active Buena Vista Presbyterian Church Member

Alice Mae Viar Lynn, 80, of Buena Vista, Virginia, died on Tuesday, February 26, 2013, at Carilion Stonewall Jackson Hospital.

She was the daughter of the late Clarence H. Viar and Flossie Sheltman Viar.

Alice was born on August 9, 1932 in Buena Vista.

She was a graduate of Andrew-Lewis High School, Salem, and James Madison College.

She pursued a professional career in elementary education, first in Norfolk, then in the City of Buena Vista, Fairfax County, Prince William County, and the City of Manassas.

In 1987 after 25 years in education, she retired with her husband and family back to Buena Vista, where they enjoyed another 25 years in retirement, and were active in church and community affairs. Alice was a Presbyterian Church (USA) Elder and an active member of the Buena Vista Presbyterian Church.

Surviving are her husband of 53 years, Francis Lynn, of Buena Vista; one son, S. Michael (Mike) Lynn and wife, Suzanne, of Nokesville; one daughter, Mary Lynn Koonce and husband, Alvin; three grandsons, Derek Lynn, Ethan Koonce, and Andrew Gibson; two granddaughters, Makenzie and Megan Lynn; three sisters, Catherine Tomlin, of Buena Vista; Jeanette Coleman, of Lexington, and Betty Simmons, of Rocky Mount; and one sister-in-law, Gloria Lynn, of Buena Vista.

A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 2, 2013, at the Buena Vista Presbyterian Church with the Rev. George Chapman III officiating. Burial will follow at Green Hill Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Buena Vista Presbyterian Church. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday, March 1, 2013, at Bolling, Grose & Lotts Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Buena Vista, Va., 540-261-5510.
