Well-Known Rockbridge County Farmer Was Active In His Community

Madison McClung (Mc) Sterrett Jr., 87, died on Wednesday, February 27, 2013, at the Benjamin Borden Health Center at Kendal of Lexington, Virginia.

Mr. Sterrett was born in Lexington, Va., on November 10, 1925, the son of the late Madison McClung Sterrett Sr. and Edna Watkins Morton Sterrett. He moved with his family to Brownsburg when he was two years old. He graduated from Brownsburg High School in 1943.

Mr. Sterrett was a life-long farmer. He and his father owned and operated Sterrett's Dairy. When Sterrett's Dairy closed in 1986, Mr. Sterrett continued as a beef cattle farmer until his retirement.

In 2007, he was presented with the Conservationist of the Year Award by the Natural Bridge Soil and Water Conservation District for his many years of conservation practices such as strip cropping, crop rotations, winter cover crops, crop residue management, tree planting on steeper acreages, and fencing to protect water sources and woodlands.

Mr. Sterrett was a member of New Providence Presbyterian Church in Raphine, where he had served as an Elder, Clerk of Session, and Trustee. He sang in the New Providence choir for more than 65 years.

He was also very active in the community.

Mr. Sterrett served on the Board of Directors at the Rockbridge Farmers Co-op for 30 years, including nine years as Chairman of the Board. For many years, he was on the Board of Directors at the Bank of Rockbridge, and continued to serve through the bank's merger with OneValley Bank, and later BB&T.

He was a long-time member of the Brownsburg Ruritan Club. Mr. Sterrett served several terms as a Director of the Natural Bridge Soil and Water Conservation District. He also was a member of the Virginia Dairymen's Association.

Mr. Sterrett was preceded in death by his first wife, Annamarye Lackey Sterrett.

He is survived by his second wife, Louise Martin Doyle Sterrett; two daughters, Isabelle Chewning, and her husband, Barry, of Raphine, and Agnes Sterrett, of Fairfax, Va.; one sister, Mary Lipscomb, of Harrisonburg, Va.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be held on Saturday, March 2, 2013 at New Providence Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Keith Cornfield officiating. A graveside burial service will be held in the New Providence Presbyterian Church Cemetery at 10:30 a.m. with the funeral following at 11 a.m. in the church sanctuary.

The family suggests memorial contributions be sent to the Kendal Fellowship Fund, 160 Kendal Drive, Lexington, VA 24450 or to the New Providence Presbyterian Church Organ Refurbishment Fund, 1208 New Providence Road, Raphine, VA 24472. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, March 1, 2013, at Harrison Funeral Home & Crematory, Lexington, Va., 540-463-2912.
