Retired C&O Brakeman Was World War II Navy Veteran

Luther Cary Reid, Sr., age 87, of 400 7th Street, Iron Gate, Virginia, died Sunday March 3, 2012 at the Highland House Nursing Home in Clifton Forge.

He was born on October 23, 1925 in Clifton Forge, a son of the late Roy Kenneth Reid, Sr. and Martha Belton Reid.

He was a member of the Iron Gate Advent Christian Church, a retired brakeman of the C&O Railroad, and a World War II Navy veteran, having served onboard the USS Wisconsin.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Edith Broughman Reid in November 2007; his son, Luther Cary Reid, Jr.; four brothers: Carl Reid, Virgil Reid, Sr., Ernest Reid, and Kenny Reid, Jr.

He is survived by his daughter, Kim Lee Reid and her fiance, Clay Johnson of Iron Gate; and two sisters, Ethel Aldridge, and Mildred Helmintoller, both of Clifton Forge.

A private burial will take place in Alleghany Memorial Park and a public memorial service will be scheduled at a later date.

The family suggests that memorial tributes take the form of contributions in his memory to the Iron Gate Advent Christian Church, 901 Market Ave., Iron Gate, VA 24448.

The Nicely Funeral Home in Clifton Forge is handling the arrangements.
