Covington Native Was Very Active In Her Community

Rev. Evelyn Harvey Spurlock, age 98, of Covington, Virginia, transitioned to her heavenly home from the Woodlands Health and Rehab Center, Clifton Forge on Friday, March 15, 2013.

She was the wife of the late Richard M. Spurlock.

She was born June 25, 1914 in Covington, the daughter of the late Forrest A. Harvey, Sr. and Maude O. Hunter Harvey.

Rev. Spurlock was a graduate of a private high school at Storer College in Harper's Ferry, WV. She entered Miner Teacher's College in Washington, DC and later transferred and graduated from Hampton Institute, Hampton, VA, where she remained a dedicated member of the alumni association.

She later attended New York University to study voice and choir conducting and attended Ohio State University to further her education in early childhood development.

Rev. Spurlock was a gifted educator and musician, who enjoyed teaching and performing in the community.

She was duly ordained to the Christian ministry in 1994.

During her career, she taught at several schools including Carver High School in Mount Olive, NC, White Elementary School in Powersville, NC and the former Watson High School and East Covington Elementary School, amassing forty-three years of teaching in public education before retiring in 1979.

She continued to teach Nursery-Kindergarten School at First Baptist Church in Covington, where she was a former member and served as organist, historian, and chairperson of children's church.

For several years, she served as Minister of Music for the First Baptist Church in Clifton Forge, VA.

She remained active with the annual meeting of the Hampton University Minister's Guild workshop. She was a life member of the Covington NAACP, where she served as the Youth Council Advisor. Evelyn was a member of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, a former member of the Covington Education Association, the Virginia Teacher Association, and the Retired Teachers Association. She was also a former worthy matron of Eastern Star-Blooming Rose #121, a member of the Board of Directors of the Salvation Army and Alleghany Highland Arts Council.

She served as a Senior Girl Scout Leader in Covington and founded the former "Social Grace Club" for the community youth.

After becoming a member of the Concerned Christian Baptist Church, she dedicated her services as a musician and organized the "Great-Grandmother's Club". Devoted to this community, she selflessly gave of her time and talents as a wife, mother, educator, musician, minister, community leader and church leader to benefit the Alleghany Highlands.

Rev. Spurlock is survived by her daughter, Maxzella Spurlock Fourqurean.

In addition to her parents, and husband, Rev. Spurlock was preceded in death by her first husband, Junius W. White, Jr.; a daughter, Matona Exia White; and a brother, Forrest A. Harvey, III.

It was Rev. Spurlock's desire to be cremated.

The public is invited to attend her memorial service that will be held at the Concerned Christian Baptist Church on Friday, March 22, 2013 from 6:00 - 7:30 p.m.
