Obituary for Mack Edward Coleman Mack Edward Coleman
World War II Veteran Earned Bronize Star For Bravery

Mack Edward Coleman, 90, of Buena Vista, Virginia, died Monday, April 1, 2013, at the home of his son with his family at his side.

Born September 23, 1922, in Rockbridge County, he was a son of the late Edmond D. and Mamie Sorrells Coleman.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, Joe, Cubby and Bill; and sister, Della. Mr. Coleman loved hunting, fishing and farming.

He served in the Army in the 99th Infantry Checkerboard Division. Mack was in Company D, 1st Battalion, 393 Regiment which was a heavy weapons unit. He was captured at the Battle of the Bulge and was a POW for four months, when he was liberated by the 6th Calvary and was released in 1946 to come home.

He acquired the rank of Staff Sgt. during his three years of service and earned the Bronze Star for bravery, three Battle Stars, one Combat Infantry Badge and a Purple Heart.

Surviving are his wife, Eva Whiteside Coleman; two sons, Michael E. Coleman and wife, Melinda, and Timothy A. Coleman and wife, Luwanna; one brother, Walter Coleman, of Buena Vista; four grandchildren, Kristen R. Coleman, Sommer C. Black, Brittany N. Coleman, Brandon L. Ayers; and two great grandchildren.

A graveside service was held 11 a.m. Friday, April 5, 2013, at Rockbridge Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Dean Staton officiating. The family received friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, April 4, 2013, at Bolling, Grose, & Lotts Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Buena Vista.
