Former U.S. Commerce Dept. Employee Was Active In Her Community

Mrs. Ardelia Demaris Dobson Thompson, age 94, died Wednesday, April 3, 2013.

She was the wife of the late Raymond H. Thompson, Sr.

Mrs. Thompson was born October 15, 1918 in Covington, Virginia, the daughter of the late Ira Dobson, Sr. and Medister Johnson Dobson.

She is a graduate of Watson High School, Jefferson Business School and completed a course in Literacy Missions Training and received a certificate in Home Nursing and Infant Care.

Mrs. Thompson was very active in her community and church serving as a Life Member and Secretary of the Berean Valley Baptist Association, a position she has held for more than fifty (50) years.

Also she served on the Alleghany Chapter of the American Red Cross; Heart Association, Arts Council, American Baptist Churches of the South, and Women for Christ Fellowship, Alleghany Highlands Mass Choir and President of the Women's Federated Improvement League.

A member of Historical First Baptist Church for more than 80 years, she has served her church as a Church clerk, Sunday School Teacher, Board of Trustees, WomanÕs Improvement Club, Secretary of Senior Choir, Sponsor of the Junior Choir, Virginia Skyline Girl Scout Council, Virginia Easter Seal Campaign and Covington Branch NAACP.

Mrs. Thompson was a former employee of the United States Department of Commerce Bureau, Southern Aid Life Insurance Company, Inc. now Atlanta Life Insurance Company for more than 60 years.

She is the proud mother of a son, Raymond H. Thompson, Jr. and wife, Jackie; grandson, Raymond H. Thompson, III and granddaughter, Jenae D. Thompson; three brothers, Ira Dobson, Jr., Forrest J. Dobson and Robert L. Dobson, Sr. and wife, Charlene. Also cherishing her memories, a devoted niece, Bernedia P. Minor, and a host of other family members and friends.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by five siblings; Tilford Johnson, Rosemary Dobson Pettus, Frances Dobson Perkins, William "Bill" Dobson; and Percy Dobson.

A funeral service will be conducted at 3:00 p.m., Wednesday, April 10, 2013 at Historical First Baptist Church, Covington, VA with Rev. Preston K. Tyler officiating. Interment will follow in Cedar Hill Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Tuesday, April 9, 2013, from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Loving Funeral Home.
