Obituary for Ira H. (Bud) Cochrane Jr. Ira H. (Bud) Cochrane Jr.
World War II Veteran Was Longtime Softball Coach

Ira H. (Bud) Cochrane Jr., 88, of Lexington, Virginia, died Saturday, April 20, 2013 at Havenwood.

Born July 31, 1924, he was a son of the late Tech. Sgt. Ira "Jimmie" Cochran and Addie B. Entsminger.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Katherine F. Cochran.

Mr. Cochrane was retired from the Virginia Department of Transportation as a surveyor and was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, where he served as an usher. He was a volunteer for the Lexington-Rockbridge Food Pantry, a member of the McDonald's Breakfast Club, and a Life Member of VFW Post #1499 of Lexington.

He was a veteran of World War II, where he served as a cannoneer in Battery B 567th AAA Auto Weapons Division in France and Germany.

A long-time hunter and fisherman, he also played, coached and umpired in the Lexington area recreational leagues. He was very proud of the young men he coached on Little League and Pony League teams. Mr. Cochrane also coached local championship men's softball teams including Hostetter's "66" and the Buena Vista Independents.

Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Helen S. Cochrane; daughter, Janet of Cloverdale; son, Mickey and fiance, Lisa Ruggerio of Glasgow; brother-in-law, John F. Smith of Oveido, Fla.; two nieces and two nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 24, 2013 at Harrison Funeral Chapel with the Rev. George Warden Jr. officiating. Burial will be private.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Rockbridge Area Hospice, P. O. Box 948, Lexington, VA 24450. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 23, 2013 at Harrison Funeral Home & Crematory, Lexington, VA.
