Lexington Resident Was Mary Washington College Graduate, Community Volunteer

Geraldine Gilbert Saunders, 87, of Lexington, Virginia, died Wednesday, April 24, 2013, at her home.

She was born March 17, 1926, in Richmond, a daughter of the late George Dewey Gilbert and Florence Collins Gilbert.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Virginia Gilbert Forbes.

Mrs. Saunders was a longtime member of the St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Lexington Garden Club and SJ Hospital Auxiliary.

Geraldine attended and graduated from Mary Washington College in Fredericksburg.

In addition to her volunteer work, she worked at Fairfield School, W&L Underground, and W&L Law School Library.

Surviving are her husband, William G. Saunders, of Lexington; three children, Gordon Saunders and his wife, Vicky, of Lexington; Cynthia Wilson, and her husband, Eric; and Mark Saunders, of Falls Church; five grandchildren, Alex Wilson, Collin Wilson, Melissa Wilson, Lyndsey Welsh, and Kyle Saunders.

The family would like to thank her current caregivers and many former caregivers, Dr. James Crews and his staff, and Rockbridge Area Hospice for their dedication and devotion to her during her illness.

A Mass of Christian burial will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday, April 27, 2013, at the St. Patrick's Catholic Church with Father Joseph D'Aurora officiating. Burial will follow at Stonewall Jackson Cemetery. Family will receive friends 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, April 26, 2013, at Harrison Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Garden Club of Virginia or to the Rockbridge Area Hospice, 315 Myers Street, Lexington, VA 24450.

Arrangements are being handled by Harrison Funeral Home & Crematory, Lexington.
