Obituary for Dr. Gustave Leo Zoecklein Dr. Gustave Leo Zoecklein
IBM Retiree Was World War II Navy Veteran

Dr. Gustave Leo Zoecklein, 88, of Lexington, Virginia, died Wednesday, May 15, 2013 at the Stonewall Jackson Hospital.

He was born June 14, 1924, in Hawthorne, N.J., a son of the late Leo Zoecklein and Jennie Devries Zoecklein.

Doctor Zoecklein received a B.A. in Liberal Arts from Muhlenberg College, a Masters of Business Administration from Rutgers University, and a Doctorate of Professional Studies in Management from Pace University.

Doctor Zoecklein enlisted in the Navy during World War II and served on the PC 487, a ship made famous when it rammed a Japanese submarine, causing it to sink.

Doctor Zoecklein was employed by the IBM Corporation and retired after many years of service, and was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church.

Surviving are his wife of 50 years, Sylvia Mentzer Zoecklein, formerly of Ephrata, Pa.; one son, Dean Zoecklein, from North Fayston, Vt.; two daughters, Amy Bergamo, of Stuart and Laurie Balgeman, of Lyle, Minn.; 10 grandchildren; and six great grandchildren.

A funeral service will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 21, 2013, at the Harrison Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Norman Tippens officiating. Burial will follow at Stonewall Jackson Cemetery, Lexington.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Trinity United Methodist Church or to the National Kidney Foundation.

Arrangements are being handled by Harrison Funeral Home & Crematory, Lexington.
