Eagle Rock Resident Dies At Age 78

Christine Viola Chambers Davenport, age 78, known as "Teat" to family and friends, departed this life on Tuesday, May 21, 2013 at her home at 862 Dagger Springs Road, Eagle Rock, Virginia.

Christine was born on November 1, 1934 in Gala, VA to the late Grant Chambers, Sr. and Molessie Wright Chambers and she attended Academy Hill.

Christine was a devoted wife and mother. She attended and served Rising Mount Zion Baptist Church all her life. She worked for Mrs. East for numerous years.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James E. Davenport; son, Ronnie Davenport; brother Grant Chambers, Jr; and three sisters, Susie Christian, Genelette Thompson, and Mildred Brown.

Christine leaves to cherish her memory a daughter, Marie Davenport (George) of Roanoke; a son, Curtis Davenport of Gala; a daughter she raised Barbara Ann Anderson and husband, Charles of Roanoke; four grandchildren, Maurice, Cliff (Herbie), Aminee, and Kirsten; nine great grandchildren, Maurice Davenport, Jr., Tiara Davenport, Helen Michelle Thorton, Kharmeni Vaughn, Dillan Harris, Damion Harris, Davon Harris, Diana Harris and Carter Harris; three sisters-in-law and five brothers-in-law; many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews; and a host of friends and other family members.

A funeral service was held on Saturday at 12:00 noon in Rising Mount Zion Church, Gala with Reverend David Halsey officiating. Interment followed in Rising Mt. Zion Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. The family wishes to thank everyone for their kindness, condolences, prayers, cards and food.

The Nicely Funeral Home, Clifton Forge handled the arrangements. The family suggests memorial tributes take the form of contributions to Rising Mt. Zion Baptist Church, 291 Sinking Creek Road, Eagle Rock, VA 24085.
