World War II Veteran Was Steamfitter

Mr. Benjamin Lewis (Mr. Ben) Griffith, Jr., age 87, of Covington, Virginia, and Waynesboro, died Sunday, June 23, 2013, at the Golden Living Center, Clifton Forge.

He was the husband of Wilda Reynolds Griffith.

Mr. Griffith was born March 7, 1926 in Charlottesville, the son of the late Benjamin Lewis Griffith, Sr. and Virginia Gooch Griffith.

He served his country as a member of the United States Navy during World War II, where he was a cox man on the USS Newport.

Mr. Ben was employed as a superintendent for Natkin and was a member of Plumber and Steam Fitters Local 10.

He attended Edgemont Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church, where he was active in the Men's Bible Class and was a member of the Main Street Methodist Church in Waynesboro.

Mr. Ben was an avid outdoorsman, who loved all types of fishing and hunting and enjoyed traveling and reading.

He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

In addition to his wife, Wilda Reynolds Griffith, he is survived by two sons, Larry A. Griffith and wife, Barbara of Richmond and Benjamin L. Griffith, III and wife, Patsy of Waynesboro; one daughter, Constance A. Depa and husband, Raymond of Discovery Bay, CA; two step children, George T. Reynolds Jr. and wife, Brenda and Lisa R. Hoke and husband, Buzz; one cousin who was reared in the home, Bill German of Waynesboro; ten grandchildren; two step grandchildren; and ten great grandchildren.

A funeral service was conducted at 12:00 p.m. Thursday, June 27, 2013, at Edgemont Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Donnie Bowker officiating. Interment followed in Cedar Hill Cemetery.

Graveside rites were conducted by the Curtis A. Smith Post 1033 Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Pallbearers were Larry Griffith, Damian Depa, Danny Walton, Scott German, Rodney German and Kyle Griffith.

The family received friends on Thursday morning from 11:00 a.m.. until service time at Edgemont Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church.

The family suggests that memorial donations be made to Mountain Regional Hospice, P.O. Box 637, Clifton Forge, VA 24422 or Edgemont Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church, 2306 S. Church Avenue, Covington, VA 24426.
