Obituary for Jack David Hicks Jack David Hicks
World War II Veteran Was Former CSX Railroad Pipefitter

Jack David Hicks, 86, of 1444 South Howard Avenue, Covington, Virginia, died July 8, 2013, at LewisGale Hospital-Alleghany.

He was the husband of Winifred Meeks "Winnie" Hicks, who preceded him in death in 2009.

Mr. Hicks was born April 28, 1927, in Clifton Forge, the son of the late Charles Richard Hicks and Gladys Hartsook Hicks.

He was retired from CSX Railroad, where he worked as a pipefitter and sheet metal worker.

A lifetime residnet of this area, he was a member of Covington Baptist Church and had served his church as a deacon and an usher.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving on the battleship USS New York in the Pacific Theatre of operations and was involved in the battles of Okinawa and Iwo Jima.

He was a former member of the Covington Lion's Club, enjoyed his family, and was a loving and supportive husband, father and grandfather.

Mr. Hicks is survived two daughters and sons-in-law, Belinda Hicks Kerns and husband, Richard and Tammy Hicks Ballou and husband, Sam, both of Covington; one grandson, Phillip Kerns and wife, Angee, of NouaKchott, Mauritania, Africa; and by two granddaughters, Marguerite Ballou and Hannah Ballou, both of Covington; caregiver Barbara Pierce and his constant companion and nagivator, CoCoa. Also surviving are a number of nieces and nephews.

A funeral service was conducted Wednesday at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Loving Funeral Home with the Rev. Chris Poluikis officiating. Interment will follow at Alleghany Memorial Park. Active pallbearers were Robert K. "Bob" Bennett, Harold Lambert, Charles B. "Bucky" Meeks, A.T. Meeks Jr., Alvin Meeks and Bub Wolfe.

Graveside rites were conducted by the Curtis A. Smith Post 1033 Veterans of Foreign Wars.

The family received friends from 12 p.m. until service time at Loving Funeral Home and will at other times at the residence of Belinda and Richard Kerns, 1515 Howard Street.

The family suggests that memorial tributes take the form of contributions to Mountain Region Hospice, P. O. Box 637, Clifton Forge, Va., 24422; or to Covington Baptist Church, P.O. Box 687, Covington, Va., 24426.
