Obituary for Martha Ann Spencer Martha Ann Spencer
Longtime School Teacher Also Served With The Peace Corps

Martha Ann Spencer, born in Lynchburg, Virginia, on March 26, 1938, and resident of Lexington, went to be with her Lord on Saturday, July 13, 2013.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Kilpen Spencer Jr.; her sisters, Wanda Brown and June Cook; and her brothers, Kip Spencer, Sterling Spencer, and Joe Spencer.

She is survived by her brothers, Jimmy Spencer, Buster Spencer, and Tommy Spencer and his wife, Susan Harb; sisters, Nancy Leech and her husband, Don, Weisy Roberts, and Alyce Harrison and her husband, Lionel; and sisters-in-law, Dot Spencer and Mary Spencer.

She is also survived by many nieces and nephews, including her special great-nephew, Marshall Nix.

A graduate of Wheaton College, she joined the Peace Corps, serving in the Philippines in the early 1960s.

Martha was a school teacher in California for 35 years and impacted many students' lives.

She was a charter member of Grace Presbyterian Church and was involved with the Lexington Historical Society and the Genealogical Society. She enjoyed doing genealogical research for people throughout the United States.

Martha was also a generous contributor to many community services. She received the Good Citizenship award from the Daughters of the American Revolution.

The family is deeply grateful for the devoted care of Rockbridge Area Hospice and Dr. Laura Kornegay.

A graveside service will be conducted at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, July 17, 2013, at the Oxford Presbyterian Cemetery with the Pastor Tony Nix and Dr. Horace Douty officiating.

The family suggests that memorial contributions be made in Martha's memory to the Rockbridge Area Hospice, 315 Myers Street, Lexington, VA 24450.
