100 Year-Old Rockbridge Resident Dies; Was Former Natural Bridge Employee

Helen Conner Daniel, 100, of Rapps Mill, Virginia, died at Heritage Hall Nursing Home in Lexington, Virginia, on Tuesday, August 20, 2013, at 7:50 a.m.

Mrs. Daniel was born in the Plank Road area of Rockbridge County on December 24, 1912, a daughter of the late John Scott and Eliza Flint Conner.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond (Ray) Rogers Daniel; three brothers, Shields, Albert, and John Conner; and four sisters, Minnie Cox, Mabel Miller, Mary Elizabeth Conner and Susan Paynter. She was also preceded in death by her son-in-law, David L. Olsen; and a special niece, Laurie Lee Olsen Thomas.

Mrs. Daniel is survived by her daughter, Annie Laurie Olsen, of Roanoke, Va.; and a son and daughter-in-law, Winfield Scott and Billie Jean Daniel. Mrs. Daniel is also survived by three grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren: George Thomas and his children, David and Romona Thomas, Nancy and Andy Ruben and their children, Abbey, Connor and Karly, of Naples, Fla., Scott and Tracy Olsen and their children, Tory and Jordan, of Covington, Wash., and Susan and Todd Michael and their daughter, Hollie, of Staunton, Va. She also leaves many nieces and nephews with whom she shared much of her life.

Mrs. Daniel came to Rapps Mill in 1931, and was an active member of the community. She enjoyed working on the farm, gardening, canning, quilting, embroidery, making hooked rugs, and made wonderful homemade biscuits. Her family has warm homes because of her skills. Her home was always open and she touched the lives of people from around the world that came to visit her.

Following the death of her husband in 1954, she was employed at Natural Bridge for 18 years, after which she returned to the farm. She was also a caretaker for several families, and was known for her integrity, strong moral standards, deep religious faith, and her ability to empower youth. She took great joy in the simple things of life.

We are thankful for the many years that we had to share with this amazing lady.

The family would like to take this opportunity to thank Heritage Hall Lexington for the care they provided, and Rockbridge Area Hospice. We also want to thank friends who assisted with her care, and especially her niece and husband, Debbie Sue and Jimmy Knick, for their faithful and loving care.

A memorial service will be conducted at Rapps Mill Church, South Buffalo Road, at 2 p.m. on Saturday, August 24, 2013, conducted by retired pastor, the Rev. Barton Hellmuth. Burial will follow at Rapps Mill Cemetery.
