Emory United Methodist Church Member Was U.S. Army Veteran

Mr. Basil Torrence (Pops) May, Sr., age 78, of Covington, Virginia, died Sunday, September 1, 2013, at the Woodlands Nursing Home, Clifton Forge.

He was the husband of the late Glenda Hepler May.

Mr. May was born November 10, 1934 in Alleghany County, the son of the late Jesse Lee May and Beulah Andrews May.

He served his country as a member of the United States Army.

Mr. May was employed by the Labor Union 680 in Roanoke.

He was a member of Emory United Methodist Church.

Pops enjoyed watching Covington Cougar Football, Lumberjacks Baseball and enjoyed hunting, fishing and playing golf.

Mr. May is survived by his children, Basil T. May, Jr. and wife, Robin Hall May, Brandon Scott May and wife, Stephanie, Hazel May Persinger and husband, Harry Persinger, Jr., Trena May Critzer and husband, Robert C. Critzer, Wanda D. Randozzo and husband, Jerry, Phyllis "Jo" Linton and husband, Mike, Lesia Newcomb and husband, Kevin, Curtis Chapman and wife, Marsie and Maurice "Moe" Chapman; grandchildren, Angela Nicely, April Fitzgerald, Robbie Critzer, Carleigh Ailstock, Michelle Nicely, Bryan May, Nicole May, James May, Basil May, III, Clarence Catron, Beth Bell, Alexandria May, Jaden May, Davin May, Shawn Linton, Shannon Linton, Jessica Newcomb, Justin Newcomb, Derek Chapman, Heather Chapman, and Christopher Chapman; fourteen great grandchildren; four brothers, Berlin May, Ralph May, Dewey May, and Freddy May; and six sisters, Edith Elhers, Barbara Carpenter, Betty Brown, Sue Terry, Pat Shifflett and Christine Young.

In addition to his parents and wife, Mr. May was preceded in death by two brothers, Buddy May and Daniel May.

A funeral service will be conducted at 6:00 p.m.. Tuesday, September 3, 2013, from the chapel of Loving Funeral Home with Rev. Bill Catoe officiating, assisted by Rev. Lynn Wright. Interment will be in Emory United Methodist Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends following the service at Loving Funeral Home and at the residence of Hazel and Harry Persinger, Jr., 313 E. Chestnut Street, Covington, at other times.

The family suggests that memorial tributes be made to Mountain Regional Hospice, P.O. Box 637, Clifton Forge, VA 24422 or the Woodlands Patient Fund, 1000 Fairview Avenue, Clifton Forge, VA 24422.
