Obituary for Theodore Cross (Ted) Shaffer, Jr. Theodore Cross (Ted) Shaffer, Jr.
LDS Church Member Was Former C&O Brakeman; Also Worked With H. O. Canfield

Theodore Cross (Ted) Shaffer, Jr., age 82, of 809 Frazier Hill Lane, Clifton Forge, Virginia, died Wednesday October 2, 2013 at his residence.

He was born August 5, 1931 in Botetourt County, the son of late Theodore Cross Shaffer Sr. and Dolly Smith Shaffer.

He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Covington, and also attended the Living Stone Ministries.

He was also a member of the Clifton Forge Masonic Lodge # 166 A.F. & A.M., where he served as Past Worshipful Master he was also a member of the Alleghany Royal Arch Chapter # 24, Alleghany Commandery #23, the Scottish Rite Bodies of the Roanoke Valley, Kazim Shrine Temple of Roanoke and the Clifton Forge Shrine Club.

He was also a beef cattle producer and farmer and served in the Virginia Army National Guard.

He retired as a brakeman with Chesapeake & Ohio Railroad and also worked at H.O. Canfield for a number of years.

He also enjoyed reading and loved being with his family.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Violet Hayslett Shaffer.

He is survived by two daughters, Joan Shaffer Akers and husband Rodger of Lynchburg; Elizabeth "Bitsy" Shaffer Drewry and husband, Michael of Staunton; a son, John Michael Shaffer and wife, Jennifer of Clifton Forge; ten grandchildren, John Rodger Akers, Jason Davis, Brandt Davis, Jasper Davis, Noel Pennybacker, Andrew Washburn, Taylor Tucker, Alex Shaffer, Hailey Shaffer and Isabella Shaffer.

Also surviving are five great grandchildren, and special friends Nora Webb, Loretta Putnam and Renee Caldwell.

A funeral service will be held 1:00 p.m. Saturday October 5, 2013 in the Chapel of Nicely Funeral Home in Clifton Forge, with Pastor Mike Rollins, Elder Basil Sampson officiating. Interment will follow at Alleghany Memorial Park.

Pallbearers will be John Michael Shaffer, John Rodger Akers, Alexander Cross Shaffer, Jasper P. Davis, Donnie Kelley, Jerry Ihme, and Billy Campbell.

Visitation will be held Friday evening from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. at Nicely Funeral Home in Clifton Forge. Masonic Rites will be conducted at 7:00 p.m. by the Clifton Forge Masonic Lodge # 166 A.F. & A.M.

The family suggest that memorial tributes take the form of Contributions in his name to the Sentara Hospice, 103 Old Church Road, Low Moor, Va. 24457.
