Steeles Tavern Native Dies At Age 90

Walter Edward Lewis Jr., 90, of Lexington, Virginia, died Saturday, October 26, 2013, at his home.

He was born July 21, 1923, in Steeles Tavern, a son of the late Walter Edward Lewis Sr. and Ethel Johnson Lewis.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Spinner Lewis and one son, Walter Edward Lewis III.

Mr. Lewis was a member of the First Baptist Church and was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

Walter served his country in the United States Marine Corps during World War II, a member of the American Legion Post #291, and a member of the PPP's.

Surviving are one daughter, Diane Jackson, of Maryland; two grandchildren, Lamont S. Lewis and Walter E. Lewis IV; three great grandchildren, Laquan Lewis, Kamarya Lewis, and Karys Lewis; one great-great-grandchild, Nadia Lewis, all of Roanoke; sister-in-law, Nora M. Lewis.

A funeral service will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday, November 1, 2013, at the First Baptist Church with the Dr. Louis Grandberry officiating. Burial will follow at Evergreen Cemetery.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.

Arrangements are being handled by Harrison Funeral Home & Crematory, Lexington.
