Obituary for Dora Murphy McCaleb Dora Murphy McCaleb
Longtime Alleghany County School Board Secretary Was Epworth United Methodist Church Member

Dora Murphy McCaleb, 86, of the Brian Center in Low Moor and formally of Selma, Virginia, died Friday, November 22, 2013 at the Brian Center.

She was born June 22, 1927 in Alleghany County to the late John Noah and Pauline Jenkins Murphy.

Her first job was a hostess for the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad. In 1963 she began her career with the Alleghany County School System as a secretary at the new Alleghany High School. When she retired from the school system in 1992 she was serving as the clerk of the School Board.

She had been a member of the Epworth United Methodist Church in Selma for fifty years and served as treasurer for many of those years.

She was a loving mother and devoted grandmother, great grandmother and sister.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Alvin "Pie" McCaleb, a brother, J.R. "Pat" Murphy, and a sister, Nora Louise "Lou" Hahn.

She is survived by two daughters, Beckie Helmintoller and husband, Clyde, of Clifton Forge, and Mary Beth Meyer and husband, Michael of Crozier, VA.; one son, John Thomas McCaleb and wife, Susan of Smith Mountain Lake; two sisters, Carrie Sue Thomas and husband, Basil of Gala, and Frankie Eleanor Gorman and husband, Bill of Lynchburg; a brother, Dennis Mike Murphy and wife, Shelia of Clifton Forge; and a sister-in-law, Ruby Murphy; seven grandchildren, Jason Helmintoller and wife, Deanne, of Clifton Forge, Bryan McCaleb and wife, Jackie, of Richmond, Nikki Morris and husband Joey of Selma, Chief Petty Officer Stephen Hall of Norfolk, Laura Metzger and husband, Neal of Richmond, Megan Osborne and husband, Patrick of Clifton Forge, and Mark McCaleb of Richmond. Eight great grandchildren, Shawn Spinner, Jacob Morris, Parker Osborne, Makenzie Morris, Paelynn Osborne, Beau Metzger, Jack McCaleb and Zoe Metzger, and a number of nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held Monday November 25, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel of Nicely Funeral Home with the Reverend Dan Purdom officiating. Interment will follow in the Cedar Hill Cemetery in Covington.

Serving as pallbearers will be her grandsons and grandsons-in-law. The family will receive friends on Sunday evening from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Nicely Funeral Home.
