Obituary for Richard A. Brown Richard A. Brown
Multi-Decorated War Veteran Was Professor Of Military Science, Very Active In His Community

Retired Army Lieutenant Colonel Richard A. Brown, 87, of Rockbridge Baths, Virginia, died on Friday, November 1, 2013, at Carilion Stonewall Jackson Hospital in Lexington.

He was born in Denver, Colorado, on July 5, 1926, to Richard P. and Adeline M. Brown.

Lt. Col. Brown grew up attending public schools and planning a military career. He enlisted in the United States Army shortly alter high school graduation, serving as an infantryman in the Philippines during World War II.

Following his initial two year stint in the Army, he returned to the Denver area to attend college at University of Denver and earned a BS in Business Administration. Upon commissioning as a Second Lieutenant, he went on to serve as an Aviation and Infantry officer in several command and staff positions, including commands at the company and battalion unit levels.

He is a graduate of several U.S. Army military training programs, including the Infantry Company Officer's Course, the Infantry Officer's Advanced Course, the Command and General Staff College, and the Aviation Flight School. Duty assignments included stateside and overseas tours at military bases in Alabama, Kansas, Hawaii, Colorado, Georgia, and Germany, as well as combat tours in the Korean and Vietnam wars.

His numerous medals and badges include two Bronze Stars, four Air Medals, the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, two National Defense Service Medals, the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, the Korean Service Medal, the Army of Occupation Medal, a Meritorious Service Medal, the American Campaign Medal, two Good Conduct Medals, two Combat infantryman Badges, the Senior Army Aviator Badge, the Philippine Republic Presidential Unit Citation and the Valorous Unit Award.

Upon his retirement, Lt. Col. Brown became the Professor of Military Science at Sarasota High School, Sarasota, Florida.

Lt. Col. Brown was a life member of the Military Officers Association of American (MOAA) and the National Rifle Association (NRA). He was also a member of the Rockbridge Baths Deer Hunt Club and the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP), serving for 10 years as the local AARP Chapter's Treasurer.

Survivors include his wife of 37 years, Kathleen Bartley Brown, of Rockbridge Baths, Va.; a sister, Louise Brown Litz, of Denver, Colo.; daughter, Debra Brown Roussos and her husband, Constatitinos Roussos, of Athens, Greece; daughter, Dianna Brown Marchand and her husband, Dale Marchand, of Eatonville, Wash.; stepson, Don L. Bartley II, and his wife, Diane Buhl Bartley, of Hanover, Pa.; stepdaughter, Sharon Bartley Patterson, of Lexington; granddaughter, Melody Roussos Feekes and her husband, Andrew Feekes, of Dallas, Texas; granddaughter, Nikki Rouses Gulley and her husband, Matthew Gulley, of Athens, Greece; grandson, Stephen Roussos, of Lubbock, Texas; granddaughter, Ashley Trtek, of Eatonville, Wash.; granddaughter, Christine Bartley Vaughn and her husband, Peter Vaughn, of York, Pa.; granddaughter, Sarah Michelle Bartley, of New York, N.Y.; grandson, Michael Sean Bartley, of Hanover, Pa.; grandson, William Edward Patterson and his wife, Nicole Lushbaugh Patterson, of Palmyra, Va.; grandson, Christopher Stewart Patterson and his wife, Cara Grealis Patterson, of Richmond, Va.; grandson, Scott Elliott Patterson and his wife, Jeanine Szczesniak Patterson, of Mount Pleasant, S.C.; eight great- grandchildren; and a niece, Linda Crisler, of Denver, Colo.

Interment will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, February 7, 2014, in Arlington National Cemetery with Full Military Honors. Friends are welcomed at the home at any time. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Rockbridge Baths Volunteer Fire Department, 5024 Maury River Road, Rockbridge Baths, VA 24473.
