Obituary for James Preston Liggins, Sr. James Preston Liggins, Sr.
Covington Native Was World War II Navy Veteran

James Preston Liggins, Sr., 91, of 315 South Marion Ave., Covington, Virginia, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, November 21, 2013, from the Woodlands Nursing Home in Clifton Forge.

Mr. Liggins was born May 11, 1922, in Covington, a son of the late Wooster and Betty Turner Liggins.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, William P. Liggins, Samuel F. Liggins, Wooster Liggins, Jr. and Walter Liggins; two sisters, Anna Allen and Beatrice Young; and two grandsons, Sydney Liggins and Michael Green.

Mr. Liggins was a veteran of World War II with the US Navy.

He retired in 1987 from MeadWestvaco after 35 years with the company.

He was a longtime member of First Baptist Church.

Surviving are his wife of 66 years, Alice Twitty Liggins, of Covington; two sons, James P. Liggins,Jr. and his wife, Dulcie, of Portsmouth, and Robert S. Liggins and his wife, Sarita, of Covington; one daughter, Wanda Jones of Covington; three grandsons, Tony Miller and his wife, JoAnn, of Covington, Christopher Liggins and his wife, Nicole, of Portsmouth, and Keeno Jones and his fiance, Jody, of New Jersey; one granddaughter, Judith Merritt and her husband, Kevin, of Rochester, NY; twelve great grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.

The funeral service will be held 3:00 p.m. Saturday, November 30, 2013 in the Chapel of Arritt Funeral Home with the Rev. Matthew T. Barnett officiating.

The family will receive their friends one hour prior to service time at the Arritt Funeral Home on Saturday.

The interment will follow in Cedar Hill Cemetery.
