Lifelong Rockbridge County Beef Cattle Farmer Dies At Age 94

Edgar Hendley Braford, 94, of Natural Bridge Station, Virginia, died Monday, December 30, 2013 at home on the family farm.

He is survived by his wife, Anne McClelland Braford; son, Bill Braford (Lea) of Natural Bridge Station; three daughters, Betsy Shepherd (EG) of Natural Bridge Station, Rebecca Rubino (Tom) of King and Queen, and Susan Englander (Brad) of Great Falls; and sister, Beth Thompson (Joe) of Lexington; nine grandchildren, Katie Shepherd, Matthew Shepherd, Will Shepherd, Ann Graziano, Patrick Braford, Jake Braford, Daniel Englander, Sam Englander, and Benjamin Englander; five great grandchildren; three stepdaughters, Ellen Gilliam, Joan Potter, Grace Parker; three stepgrandchildren, Marnie Caldwell, Susanne O'Neal and Chas Potter; and five step great grandchildren; and many nieces; nephews; and in-laws.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Jean Revercomb Braford; parents, Lloyd D. Braford Sr. and Louise Ruff Braford; sisters, Moreland Claytor, Mary Martha Lichtenberg, Barbara Hall; brothers, Buck Braford, Hugh Stark Braford, Richard Braford, Robert Braford and Lloyd Braford, and grandson, Aaron McMath Braford.

Ed was a lifelong beef cattle farmer and cattle dealer in the Natural Bridge area. He served on the Board of Directors of Roanoke-Hollins Stockyard and the Bank of Natural Bridge.

He was an active member of the Natural Bridge Ruritan Club for over 60 years. He was a mentor to many, investing his time and efforts in the community and the community responded in kind.

Ed was a dedicated lifelong member of High Bridge Presbyterian Church, where he served as both an elder and a deacon. He faithfully served as cemetery trustee for many years.

Following a private committal service, a Celebration of Life service will be conducted by the Reverend Jason Grimes at High Bridge Presbyterian Church on Friday, January 3, 2014 at 2 p.m. There will be no visitation at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages a contribution be made to the Rockbridge Area Hospice, 315 Myers Street, Lexington, VA 24450 or High Bridge Presbyterian Church, 67 High Bridge Church Road, Natural Bridge, VA 24578.

Arrangements are being handled by Harrison Funeral Home & Crematory, Lexington.
