Bessie Smith (Mother) Sligh, 104, of Lexington, Virginia, died on Tuesday, January 28, 2014, at Carilion Stonewall Jackson Hospital.

She was born on July 21, 1909, in Rockbridge County, a daughter of the late Charles Thomas Smith and Mary Virginia Hostetter Smith.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William H. Sligh; one son, Wayne O. Sligh; three brothers, Russell, Daniel, and Raymond Smith; four sisters, Jettie Smith, Edna Brown, June Brown and Louise Toroian; and three sons-in-law, Eddie Carter, Robert D. Lotts, and Sylvia Reynolds.

Mrs. Sligh was a member of the Lexington Baptist Church.

Surviving are her daughters, Carrol Lotts and Barbara Reynolds; grandchildren, Larry Lotts, Greg Lotts, Deborah Falls (Nale), Kimberly Jones (Charles), Cheree Paxton (Joey), Linda Clark (John), Cynthia Baker, Terry Sligh, and Wendy Michalow (Thomas); 17 great grandchildren; 11 great great grandchildren; one sister, Pearl Goodbar; one sister-in-law, Ella Hostetter; and many nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Friday, January 31, 2014, at the Harrison Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Benjamin W. Dowling III and the Pastor Michael Wilburn officiating.

Burial will follow at Rockbridge Memorial Gardens.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Bessie's memory to a charity of your choice.
