Anne Claytor Conklin, 66, of Lexington, Virginia, left this life and went to be with her Lord and Savior on Sunday, February 23, 2014, at her home, surrounded by family and wonderful friends.

The daughter of the late Anna Buchanan Claytor and Melvin Carson Claytor, Anne was born in Lexington, Va., on October 28, 1947, in the Stonewall Jackson House.

Surviving are her husband of 24 years, Harold; and one son, John F. Ax and wife, Carrie, of San Antonio, Texas; and her grandchildren Taylor, Emily, and Shane Ax. Also surviving are stepdaughter, Laura Pritt and husband, Wayne, of Goshen, Va.; five stepgrandchildren; and one stepgreat-grandchild.

In addition, Anne is survived by four siblings, William M. Claytor and Brenda, of Lexington, M. Michael Claytor and wife, Sandy, of Buena Vista, Robert E. Claytor and wife, Sandra, of Lexington, and Rita C. Royce and husband, Ray, of Chester, Pa.

Anne has also been blessed by her association over the years with a very close family friend, Phyllis Moore. Another special friend to whom she has endeared herself was her golfing partner, companion, and confidant, Ann May, referring to her as her, "little girl." Occupying a special place in Anne's heart as well were Ian and Sarah Treger. An inspiration to all her nieces and nephews, she will be remembered with love, respect, and admiration.

With too many names to mention, Anne has been blessed with an abundant number of friends from the banking, sports, beach, and North River camping communities. She will be sadly missed by her loving Yorkie, Bernie; and cats, Fritz and Izzy.

Anne began her banking career in 1965 and retired as a premier banker in 2007 after 42 years of dedicated service. After her retirement, she had the pleasure of working for her good friends Neil and Michelle Treger.

She was a member of Elliotts Hill United Methodist Church, where she served as the charge treasurer for many years. As a member of the Lexington Sunrise Rotary Club, Anne served as treasurer for 15 years and received three prestigious Paul Harris Awards. She was recently awarded the Rotary International District award for her service in that position.

As an avid and very competitive sports person, Anne played on the two time state champion Green Beret Softball Team, sponsored by Colonna Real Estate. Being an excellent bowler, she collected many trophies over the years, starting out with duck pins and then ten pins. Excelling in golf, Anne was club champion at Lexington Golf and Country Club for 14 years, where crowds of local golf enthusiasts would gather to watch the final rounds of the Lady's Club Championship. Her competitive spirit led her to play in many golf tournaments around the state, winning the Women's Best Ball Championship at the Homestead in 2003 with her friend, Ann May, and also winning low gross champion there in 2006. Scoring a hole-in-one in 1999 was a valued accomplishment.

Anne enjoyed a wealth of other interests including knitting, crocheting, needle point, and reading. Through the years, with her husband, Harold, she derived much pleasure from camping and going on cruises.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, February 27, 2014, at Harrison's Funeral Home. A Celebration of Life will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Friday, February 28, 2014, at Harrison's Funeral Home Chapel with the Pastor Sarah Payne officiating. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations to be made to Rockbridge Area Hospice, P.O. Box 948, Lexington, VA 24450.
