Julia Evelyn Higgins, 89, of Lexington, died Sunday, March 23, 2014 at Stonewall Jackson Hospital.

Born July 5, 1924 in Santa Maria, California, she was a daughter of the late Joseph M. Souza and Phyllis Nunez Souza.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Emory Wilbert Higgins, Sr. and one sister, Dorothy Reitz.

Mrs. Higgins was a member of the Bible Church at Rockbridge.

Surviving are one son, Emory W. Higgins, Jr.; two daughters, Susan Marlene Bennington, Carol Nair; one brother, Wilfred Souza; one sister, Viola Mead; special friend, Edith Smith; five grandchildren; four great- grandchildren.

A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Thursday, March 27, 2014 at Harrison Funeral Home with the Rev. George Warden officiating. Burial will follow at Ebenezer A.R.P. Cemetery.

The family will receive friends 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 26, 2014 at Harrison Funeral Home & Crematory, Lexington, VA.
