Obituary for Kathleen Ogden Byers Kathleen Ogden Byers
Covington Resident Dies At Age 109

Mrs. Kathleen Ogden Byers, age 109, of Covington, Virginia, passed away Thursday, March 27, 2014, at the Highland House, Clifton Forge.

She was the wife of the late Peter Payne Byers, Sr.

Mrs. Byers was born February 1, 1905 in Coleman Falls, the daughter of the late Charles Newbill Ogden and Minnie Mathews Ogden.

Kathleen moved to Covington in 1930 when she married Peter Byers, Sr. and was a longtime resident of Rosedale before moving to the Highland House in 2002.

During her working career, Mrs. Byers had been employed by the former Covington Grocery.

She was a member of Christ United Methodist Church.

Kathleen was an avid gardener and was noted for her rock garden and knowledge of flowers and flower arrangements.

Mrs. Byers was also a lifetime member of the Jackson River Garden Club.

Mrs. Byers is survived by her only child, Peter Payne Byers, Jr. and wife, Harriet of Covington; three grandchildren, Gary Byers and fiancˇe, Margaret Hughes of Mechanicsburg, PA, Peter Byers and wife, Jackie of Acworth, GA, and Kevin Byers and wife, Mary of Sharpsburg, GA; and seven great grandchildren, Ashley, Alexandria, Aaron, Lauren, Keegan, Mathew and Christopher.

The family would like to express their gratitude to the many caregivers at Highland House and Mountain Regional Hospice.

A funeral service will be conducted at 1:00 p.m.. Monday, March 31, 2014, from the chapel of Loving Funeral Home with Rev. Mike Snider officiating. Interment will follow in Alleghany Memorial Park.

Pallbearers will be Peter Byers, Aaron Byers, Gary Byers, Kevin Byers, Harold Higgins and A.A. Hayslett, Jr. The family will receive friends on Sunday evening from 7:00 - 8:30 p.m. at Loving Funeral Home.

The family suggests that memorial donations be made to Christ United Methodist Church, 200 E. Fudge Street, Covington, VA 24426 or Mountain Regional Hospice, P. O. Box 637, Clifton Forge, VA 24422.
