Retired Math Teacher, Principal, Worked In Area School Systems For Decades

Sam Boyd Wolfenbarger, 83, of 1907 Oakwood Drive, Clifton Forge, Virginia, died Friday, April 4, 2014 at Lewis Gale Medical Center in Salem.

He was born in Clinchport, Virginia, on February 8, 1931, the son of the late John Franklin and Anne Necessary Wolfenbarger.

He was a retired math teacher and principal in the Clifton Forge City School System and the Alleghany Highlands School System.

He received a B.A. degree from Emory and Henry College in 1952 . He then did graduate work at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and the University of Virginia, where he received a Masters degree in Math Education 1959.

Mr. Wolfenbarger touched the lives of thousands of students he taught during his 35 years in education. He has also worked as a school census taker and was a member of the Virginia Education Association.

He was an active member of the First Christian Church Disciples of Christ in Clifton Forge, where he had served as deacon, trustee and elder.

He served in the United States Navy for 4 years, and he loved the St. Louis Cardinals baseball team.

He is survived by his wife, Sonia Johnson Wolfenbarger of Clifton Forge; a son, Stanley Alan Wolfenbarger and wife, Sharon of South Hill; grandchildren, Lauren Wolfenbarger and Taryn Cameron and husband, Michael; a brother-in-law, Samuel Johnson of Spring City, Tennessee; one niece and one nephew.

A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, April 8, 2014 from the chapel of Nicely Funeral Home with the Rev. Glenn Clements officiating. Interment will follow in the Mountain View Cemetery, Clifton Forge.

Active Pallbearers will be Johnny Mandeville, Jr., Steve Keyser, Samuel Johnson, Wade Evans, Tommy Johnson, Larry Hipes, Michael Cameron and Paul Dameron. Honorary Pallbearers will be Kenny Keyser and Alan Hickman. The family will receive friends on Monday evening from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. at Nicely Funeral Home and at other times at the residence.

The family suggest memorial tributes take the form of contributions in Mr. Wolfenbarger's name to the First Christian Church Disciples of Christ, 319 Church Street, Clifton Forge, Va. 24422 or to the charity of your choice.
