Anne Everett Mish, 87, of Lexington, Virginia, died Wednesday, April 9, 2014 at her home.
Born April 22, 1926 in Southampton County, Virginia, a daughter of the late Caleb Roy Everett and Thelma Eley Everett.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Robert W. H. Mish, Jr. and two brothers, C. Roy Everett and Joseph L. Everett.
Surviving are her two sons, Robert W. H. Mish, III of Lexington, Virginia; Everett H. Mish and wife, Bruce and their children, Brucie and Robert of Manakin Sabot, Virginia; one sister, Winifred Everett Reid of Richmond, Virginia.
A lifelong horsewoman and educator, Mish was graduated with a bachelor's degree from Mary Washington College and a master's in education from the University of Virginia.
She began teaching in 1947 at Southern Seminary and served the college until 1991.
While her career in education was exemplary, her reputation in the world of horses was widely celebrated. The name Anne Mish and educational horsemanship are synonymous in this part of Virginia, primarily due to her presence as the driving force in developing a nationally renowned riding program at Southern Seminary. In 1966, the school honored Mish by placing her name on its new indoor riding arena, and in 1988, Mish was nominated to the Virginia Horse Shows Association Horsewoman of the Year. In 1997, she was inducted into the Southwest Hunter/Jumper Association's Hall of Fame. For most of her life she showed and bred many equine champions. It has been said that as a small child she "climbed on a fence, got on the mule's back and rode off. She has been riding ever since."
A graveside service was conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 12, 2014 at Bethel Presbyterian Church in Middlebrook, Virginia with Dr. William Klein officiating. The family and friends gathered at Little Acres following the service.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Lexington Presbyterian Church or the Rockbridge Area Hospice.
