MeadWestvaco Maintenance Mechanic Retiree Was Former Covington City Council Member

Winfred Burman (Jake) Crawford, 94, of 731 North Augusta Avenue, Covington, Virginia, died Monday, April 14, 2014, in Lewis Gale-Alleghany Hospital at Low Moor.

Mr. Crawford was born January 31, 1920, in Craig County, a son of the late Charles H. and Emma Adams Crawford.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Roy Crawford, Maynard Crawford, Theron Crawford and Harold Crawford, and two sisters, Marie Hill and Phyllis Porter.

Jake retired from MeadWestvaco as a maintenance mechanic in 1982 after 43 years with the company.

He was a veteran of World War II with the United States Navy in the Pacific Theater and was a longtime member of Curtis A. Smith Post #1033, Veterans of Foreign Wars.

He was a member of McAllister Memorial Presbyterian Church, where he served as a deacon and elder.

He was a former member of Covington City Council.

He was a retired member of the Westvaco Rescue Squad and Fire Department and had served as Vice President of Union Local 675.

Jake loved to hunt, fish, garden and talk politics.

Surviving are his wife of 72 years, Mildred Key Crawford, of Covington; his son and daughter-in-law, Darrell and Ruth Crawford, of Covington; three daughters and sons-in-law, Donna and Doug Arrington of Covington, Tammy and Jerry Ferris, and Emmy and Dean Baker, all of Blue Ridge; five grandchildren, Shane Crawford, Shannon Crawford and wife, Lora, Joshua Steffey and wife, Stephanie, Savannah Yauss and husband, Stephen, and Chelsea Broce; three great grandchildren, Marley Crawford, Dakota Crawford and Hunter Steffey; one brother, Charles Denver "Denny" Crawford and his wife, Evan, of Madison, WI; one sister, Frances Brouse, and her husband, Tommy, of Sanford, NC, and a number of nieces and nephews.

The funeral service will be held Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Arritt Funeral Home.

The interment will be made in the Suck Springs Baptist Church Cemetery at Bedford at 4:00 p.m. with graveside rites conducted by Veterans of Foreign Wars.

The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the funeral on Wednesday at Arritt Funeral Home.

The family suggests that donations in Mr. Crawford's name be made to Mountain Regional Hospice, P. O. Box 637, Clifton Forge, VA 24422.
