Army Veteran, Former Roanoke Resident, Worked With Area Law Enforcement For Years

Ms. Jane Bruce Willis Solomon, age 83, of Covington, Virginia, died Saturday, April 19, 2014, at the Golden Living Center- Alleghany, Clifton Forge.

Ms. Solomon was born March 31, 1931 in White Sulphur Springs, WV, the daughter of the late John C. Willis and Lilly Robertson Willis.

She served her country as a member of the United States Army.

Jane had been a resident of Roanoke, where she was employed by the Roanoke County Sheriff's Department and Roanoke County General District, Juvenile and Domestic Courts. She also worked as the store detective for Miller & Rhodes in Roanoke before coming to this area in 1977. Ms. Solomon worked as a policewoman and dispatcher for the Clifton Forge Police Department before becoming a dispatcher for the Alleghany County Sheriff's Department until her retirement.

Jane was a member of Granbery Memorial United Methodist Church.

Ms. Solomon is survived by her sister, Norma Ballard Ferris and husband, Randall of Covington; two nieces, Michelle Ferris Smith and husband, Bert of Woodsboro, MD, and Scarlet Ferris Ratliff and husband, Craig of Amelia; and special friends, J.P. Kern and Helen Hutton, both of Covington.

In addition to her parents, Ms. Solomon was preceded in death by her uncle, John Basil Ballard, and her aunt, Eva Maude Ballard in whose home Jane was reared.

A graveside service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m., Monday, April 21, 2014, at Hill Crest Cemetery, White Sulphur Springs, WV with Rev. Chuck Cole officiating.

The family received friends on Sunday evening from 7:00 - 8:30 p.m. at Loving Funeral Home.
