School Bus Driver Was Also The Overlook Grounds Keeper

Charles (Charlie) Clayton Bird, 65, of 1314 Walnut Ave, Buena Vista, Virginia, died Tuesday, May 13, 2014 at his residence.

He was born May 30, 1948 in Hot Springs, Virginia, the son of the late Oscar Bird and Edith (Smith) Bird.

He was a retired school bus driver for Bath County and the grounds keeper for The Overlook.

He was a veteran of the U. S. Army, having served during Vietnam, receiving two Purple Hearts, the Marksmanship Badge and the Cross of Gallantry.

He was a member of Green Valley Methodist Church and attended Burnsville United Methodist Church.

He was an avid outdoorsman, a loving husband, father and grandfather.

He is survived by his wife, Lisa Bird of Buena Vista; a child, Carylne Smock and fiance, Charles William Byers; two step-daughters Laura Hise and Brittney Hise; three grandchildren, Ethan Huffman, Levi Hise and Charles Clayton Byers; a sister, Eleanor Smith of Alexandria, Virginia; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Fred Byrd and Ralph Bird, and a sister, Lucille Sams.

A graveside funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, May 17, 2014 at Green Valley Cemetery with Pastor Billy Grahm officiating.

The family will receive friends Friday evening from 6:00 Ð 8:00 p.m. at McLaughlin & Young Funeral Home.
