Former Georgia Bonded Fibers, W&L Employee Was Devoted Family Man

Fred Cleo Coffey, 77, of Buena Vista, Virginia, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, June 15, 2014, at his home surrounded by his family.

He was born January 14, 1937 in Rockbridge County, a son of the late Edward Ferman Coffey and Beulah Wiseman Coffey.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a stillborn daughter, Deborah Ann; his first wife, Hilda Agnor Coffey; brothers Bruce, Charles, Junior, Lewis and Jerry; and a sister, Shirley Mitchell.

Fred worked for many years at Georgia Bonded Fibers, and as a security officer for Washington and Lee University, before retiring with 31 years of service in 2007.

He was a loving and devoted husband, father, brother and doting grandfather.

Fred is survived by his wife, Judy; daughter, Melissa Coleman and husband, Chris; son, David Chittum and wife, Jill; his grandchildren, who were the apple of his eye, Jonathan Tyler Coleman, Dylan Vance Chittum, Allison Grace Coleman and Nicholas David Chittum, all of Buena Vista; a sister, Bernice Grow of Buena Vista; and a brother, Maynard Coffey of Vinton.

A celebration of Fred's life was held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, June 18, 2014 at Bolling, Gross & Lotts Funeral Home conducted by his grandson, Jonathan Coleman, and Rev. George Close. Burial followed at Rockbridge Memorial Gardens. The family received friends one hour prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions in Fred's memory be made to Rockbridge Area Hospice, 315 Myers Street, Lexington, VA 24450.

Arrangements by Bolling, Grose & Lotts Funeral Home and Cremation Service.
