Longtime Covington Businessman Was World War II Veteran, Active In His Community

Mr. Woodrow Stanley Rooklin, age 89, passed away August 7, 2014 with his family at his side.

Mr. Rooklin (Chook) was the husband of the late Helen Marie McCormick Rooklin.

Mr. Rooklin was born on November 25, 1924 at the Rooklin family home on Marion Street in Covington, Virginia, to the late David Hillard Rooklin and Anna Zauber Rooklin.

Mr. Rooklin was President and Chairman of the Board of Rooklin's Incorporated and Rooklin Real Estate LLC at the time of his death.

Mr. Rooklin was a graduate of Covington High School, Class of 1940. Mr. Rooklin served his country as a Pharmacists Mate in the United States Navy during World War II in the Asiatic Ð Pacific Theatre of Operations aboard the U.S.S. Calvert.

He graduated from the University of Virginia in 1949 with a Bachelor of Science Degree from the Commerce School.

He was a life member of the Thomas Jefferson Society at the university and a Phi Epsilon Pi fraternity brother.

Mr. Rooklin served on the Board of Directors of Covington National Bank and First Virginia Bank. He was a Rotary International Paul Harris Fellow. Mr. Rooklin was a Past Master of Covington Masonic Lodge 171 AF & AM. He was a past president of the Covington Retail Merchants Association. Mr. Rooklin was a member of the 10 oÕclock Coffee Club and numerous other community affairs.

Mr. Rooklin was preceded in death by uncles, Harry and Abe Rooklin; beloved sisters, Evelyn Rooklin and Natalie Doskow; and brothers-in-law, Dr. Sam Doskow, Dr. Buck McCormick and Lt. Colonel Ret. Joe McCormick.

Mr. Rooklin is survived by his brother, Alfred J. Rooklin and his wife, Mary Jane; children, David Hillard Rooklin and wife, Jeannie, Margaret Ann Rooklin, Patricia Rooklin Carlton and husband, John, and Elizabeth Rooklin Warwick and husband, Mike. Mr. Rooklin (Pop Pop) is also survived by grandchildren, Hannah Elizabeth Carlton, Seth David Carlton, Julia Margaret Carlton, Leah Grace Carlton, David Hillard Rooklin, III, Woodrow Kent Rooklin, Sarah Margaret Rooklin, Lauren Warwick Jordan and husband, Jason, Edward Stanley Warwick and husband, Gary White, and Michael David Warwick. Mr. Rooklin (Great Pop Pop) is also survived by his great grandson, Jack Berkley Jordan.

A graveside service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, August 10, 2014, at Cedar Hill Cemetery with Father Tom Collins officiating.

Friends wishing to attend the service should assemble at Cedar Hill Cemetery by 1:45 p.m.

Graveside rites will be conducted by Covington Masonic Lodge # 171 AF & AM.

Pallbearers will be J. P. Kern, William Keyser, James Jennings, Cecil Walton, George Filer, Robert G. Hoke, Gary Hodges, and Richard B. Bowyer.

Honorary pallbearers will be Pat Loving, Fletcher Watson, David Minter, Pete Does, Warren Linkous, Jimmy Linkenhoker, Dean Andrews, Curt Martin, Pat Winston, Father Louis Benoit and Horton Beirne.

The family will receive friends on Saturday evening from 7:00 - 8:30 p.m. at Loving Funeral Home.
