Helen Austin Slough, long time Buena Vista, Virginia, resident passed away in her home on August 18, 2014, after a long illness.

She was married for over 61 years to Lawrence (Sonny) Slough and they had one daughter, Sharon Slough Joustra.

Born in 1932, Helenlovingly devoted much of her life to her family, church and community.

She was born in Rockbridge County to John Gardner Austin and Ruby Johnson Austin.

After attending business school, she worked briefly at the Valley Department Store and then at Rockbridge County Cleaners. It was here that she met Lawrence "Sonny" Slough. They were married in 1952 and became very active, as a couple, in the Buena Vista Baptist Church.

Helen taught Sunday School and served as the church librarian for many years.

Her career at Reeves Brothers Corporation spanned over 35 years.

Helen is survived by her husband, Lawrence (Sonny) Slough; a daughter, Sharon Slough Joustra; son-in-law, Jim Joustra; grandson, Andrew Joustra; sisters, Ann Austin (Robert) Bennett, Jessie Austin (Doolie) Secrist, Gladys Austin (Wallace) Floyd and Nancy Austin (Brad) Carver; brother, Gerald (Mary) Austin; numerous nephews and nieces and many devoted friends.

Graveside services at Green Hill Cemetery will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, August 22, 2014. A memorial tribute will follow at noon at the Buena Vista Baptist Church.

In lieu of flowers the family has requested donations be made to Rockbridge Area Hospice.
