Alleghany School System Bus Driver Was Covington Native

Mr. Donald Ray (Donnie) Heironimus, age 68, of Covington, Virginia, died Thursday, September 18, 2014, at LewisGale Hospital, Salem, VA.

He was the husband of the late Carol Garrett Heironimus, who preceded him in death in 2012.

Mr. Heironimus was born July 28, 1946 in Covington, the son of the late Leonard Ray Heironimus and Dorothy Walters Heironimus.

He was currently employed as a school bus driver for the Alleghany County School System.

Mr. Heironimus was a member of Temple Baptist Church.

Donnie joined the Covington Rescue Squad in 1990 and joined the Covington Fire Department in 1991.

Although he was now a retired member of the squad and an active member of the fire department, Donnie served in numerous social and working offices in both organizations, including that of chaplain, second lieutenant and assistant fire marshal. Through his service to the rescue squad, Donnie had earned Shock Trauma status as well as Emergency Medical Technician-Enhanced status and, in the fire department, he was a Level III fire instructor and was Firefighter III certified.

Mr. Heironimus was a member of many fire and EMS state competition teams, winning numerous awards as a representative of the city of Covington. He was a part of the 2005 Vehicle Extrication Team that won the State Championship title at the Virginia Association of Volunteer Rescue Squads annual convention in Virginia Beach.

Donnie was a lifetime member of the Covington Jaycees.

Mr. Heironimus is survived by his sister, Judy H. Griffith and husband, James M. "Grif" Griffith of Covington; an aunt, Louise W. Cooper; a cousin, Barbara Killen and husband, John; and special neighbors, Berkley and Mary Mays.

A funeral service was conducted at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, September 21, 2014, from the chapel of Loving Funeral Home with Rev. Paul Burns officiating. Interment followed in Cedar Hill Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be members of the Covington Rescue Squad and Covington Fire Department.

The family suggests that memorial donations be made to the Covington Rescue Squad, P. O. Box 588, Covington, VA 24426.
