Obituary for Dallas H. (Rat) Mays Dallas H. (Rat) Mays
Retired CSX Railroad Sheet Metal Worker Also Worked With Nicely Funeral Home

Dallas H. (Rat) Mays, 87, of 3338 Westmoreland Dr., Roanoke, Virginia, formerly of 320 W. Ridgeway St. Clifton Forge, Virginia, died Thursday November 20, 2014 at Pheasant Ridge in Roanoke after a brief illness.

He was born in Low Moor, on December 24, 1926, a son of the late Mel and Florence Mays.

He retired from the CSX Railroad as a sheet metal worker in the locomotive shops in Clifton Forge, and worked as a part time employee of Nicely Funeral Home from 2003 until 2011.

He served during WWII as a Corporal in the 1532 ATC Army Air Corps, serving in Guam and the Philippines.

He was also a member of Central United Methodist Church.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 51 years Mary Mays in February of 2003; three sisters, Blanche Mays, Gertrude Lucas, and Delma Oyler, and two brothers, Rev. James T. Mays and Morris F. "Curley" Mays.

He is survived by his daughter, Donna Lee Mays, of Roanoke, his "sis", Peggy Landram, of Fincastle, his special adopted grandchildren, Emma and Andrew Oertle, of Roanoke, and also his "furry and scaly" grandbabies, Yogi, Ellie Kate, Gracie, and Annie, as well as numerous nieces and nephews and their families.

A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday in the Chapel of Nicely Funeral Home in Clifton Forge with the Reverend W. Pembroke Hall officiating.

Interment will follow in Alleghany Memorial Park in Low Moor.

Active pallbearers will be Tom Withrow, Dr. Paul Stewart, Jerry Hall, Brian Hall, Herbert Sams and Harvey Burns. Honorary pallbearers will be Harry "Pete" Alston and his co-workers at Nicely Funeral Home.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. Monday at Nicely Funeral Home and also 1 hour prior to the service on Tuesday. The family suggests that memorial tributes take the form of contributions in his memory to the Blue Ridge Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association, 2728 Colonial Ave, SW Suite 2 Roanoke, VA 24457, the Alleghany Humane Society, P.
