Obituary for Carl William Martin Carl William Martin
World War II Veteran Was Westvaco Power Department Retiree

Mr. Carl William Martin of 1122 Dolly Ann Drive, Covington, VA, died Thursday, December 11, 2014.

He was born May 5, 1926 in Jumping Branch, WV, a son of the late Arthur M. and Mary K. Martin.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Frances Humphreys Martin on January 7, 2005, and a brother, Arthur M. Martin, Jr.

Mr. Martin served with the U. S. Army Infantry as a Staff Sergeant during World War, II in the European Theatre of Operations.

Carl retired from Westvaco with forty-one years service in the power department.

He was a life member of Curtis A. Smith Post 1033 Veterans of Foreign Wars, a member of Local 8675 United Paperworkers, and a member of Covington Lodge 610 L.O.O.M.

Mr. Martin assisted his father in maintaining the grounds at the Homestead as well as its associated golf courses and was a personal friend of Sam Snead and many others.

Carl loved the outdoors, was an avid golfer, and once shot a 67 on the Upper Cascades course.

He loved his children and grandchildren.

He is survived by a brother, Albert "Poss" Martin and wife, Nancy of Harrisonburg; three sons and their wives, Freddie D. Martin, Steve A. Martin and wife, Gayle, Michael W. Martin, all of Covington; seven grandchildren, Tiffany Martin McCormick, Erin Martin Nicely, Meghan Martin Potts, Melissa Martin, Aaron Martin, Katie Martin, and Maddie Martin; and six great grandchildren, Zoey McCormick, Thomas Randall McCormick, IV, Ethan Nicely, Kara Nicely, Mason Alan Nicely and Emma Potts.

A graveside service was conducted at 2:00 p.m. Monday, December 15, 2014, at Alleghany Memorial Park with Rev. Mike Warren officiating.

Military rites were conducted at the graveside by Curtis A. Smith Post 1033 Veterans of Foreign Wars.

The family will received friends Monday afternoon from at Loving Funeral Home.
