Former Owner Of Rapp's Shell Service Station Was Korean War Veteran

Benjamin Willard (Bill) Rapp, Jr., 87, of 1533 South Howard Avenue, Covington, Virginia, died Wednesday, January 28, 2015, at his residence.

He was born September 2, 1927, in Covington, a son of the late Benjamin Willard Rapp, Sr. and Bessie Plymale Rapp.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Rick Rapp, in 2007.

From 1956 until his retirement in 1988, Bill was the Owner/Operator of Rapp's Shell Service Station on Monroe Street.

Following his retirement he was employed by Advance Auto for several years.

He was a charter member of Parrish Court United Methodist Church, where he was a member of the Adult Sunday School Class and the Men's Club.

He was sixty year member of Covington Lodge 171 AF & AM.

Bill was a veteran of the Korean War with the United States Army, and was a longtime member of the Curtis A. Smith Post 1033, Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Surviving are his wife of 60 years, Reba Troxell Rapp of Covington; one son, Michael Rapp, and his wife, Cheryl, of Chesterfield; a daughter-in-law, Debbie Rapp, of Covington; one grandson, John Rapp, of Glen Allen; two step-granddaughters, Melissa Owens and Lauren Owens, both of Mechanicsville; a great grandson, Malekai Owens, of Chesterfield and his adopted families, Dale and Sandy Oyler and their children, Kelly and R. J. Helmintoller, Stacy Oyler and Emily Oyler and Rick and Belinda Kern, and Phillip and Angie Kern.

The funeral service will be held Monday, February 2, 2015, in the Parrish Court United Methodist Church with the Rev. Deb. Washer officiating assisted by the Rev. Bill Gilliland.

Interment will be made in Alleghany Memorial Park with graveside rites conducted by Curtis A. Smith Post # 1033, Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Fraternal Rites will be conducted by Covington Lodge #171 AF & AM Sunday evening at 6:30 p.m. in the Chapel of Arritt Funeral Home. Following the Masonic ritual the family will receive friends until 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

The family suggests that donation in Mr. Rapp's name be made to the Memorial Fund of Parrish Court United Methodist Church, 2343 S. Carpenter Drive, Covington, VA 24426 or to Mountain Regional Hospice, P. O. Box 237; Clifton Forge, VA 24422.
