Alleghany County Native Was Retired Local Kmart Manager

Mildred Jennings Thurston, 90, of 2820 S. Gum Ave., Covington, Virginia, died Monday February 16, 2015 at Lewis Gale Alleghany Regional.

Mrs. Thurston was born May 14, 1924 in Alleghany County, the daughter of the late Christopher Pollard Jennings and Cindy Kelly Jennings Arrington.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, William J. "Bill" Thurston in 2014, and a son, Larry Gene Thurston in 2009.

Mildred was a former employee of the Industrial Rayon Plant. After she worked at the Grants Department Store and later retired as manager of K-Mart.

She was a member of Trinity Baptist Church and later attended Calvary Baptist Church.

She loved her family and friends as family. She had smiles, hugs, and kisses for everyone. Her dedication to her faith in Jesus Christ is what was important and evident in her daily walk.

Surviving are her daughter, Brenda Thurston Brinkley, and her precious son-in-law, Jack of Roanoke; a granddaughter, Erin Thurston of Vinton, one brother-in-law, James Smith Sr. of Selma; nieces and nephews including Denise Massey of Hawaii, Gary Schlei of Florida, Wayne Schlei of College Park, GA, Charlotte Taylor of Clifton Forge, Beverly Parcham of Northern VA, and James Smith Jr. of Selma, and a special friend, Sam Arrington of Covington.

The funeral service will be held Thursday February 19 at 11:00 a.m. in the Chapel of Arritt Funeral Home with the Rev. Dean Bowser officiating and assisted by Dr. Darryl Crim.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.

The internment will follow at Alleghany Memorial Park.
